Christmas photo session with a baby or toddler: tips from a childminder-photographer
Timing, comfort, comforter and outfits: a gentle guide
A Christmas baby photo in Touraine is entirely possible and makes a beautiful keepsake, as long as you follow your little one's rhythm. A rested, well-fed and relaxed baby or toddler is easy to photograph: the right time of day, a warm studio and a little patience do most of the work.
I'm Claire Chaumont, a photographer in Varennes (37600), South Touraine, a registered childminder since 2009 and mum to two teenagers. Crying babies, toddlers on the run and unexpected giggles are my everyday life. Here are my tips for making your first Christmas session a tender moment rather than an obstacle course.
Why photograph your baby at Christmas?
A baby changes almost every month. Christmas at 3 months looks nothing like Christmas at 15 months: cheeks, hands, gaze, everything evolves. A Christmas session marks a milestone in time, with warm settings and soft lights.
Many parents make it a tradition: a different set each year, and a small album that tells the story of their child's growth from one Christmas to the next. The photos also become greeting cards and gifts for grandparents, and over the years, keepsakes to hand down.
1. Pick the time of day when your baby is at their best
This is tip number one, well before outfits or sets. A tired or hungry baby won't be themselves, and it shows in the images. Think about your child's day: a good night's sleep, a feed taken calmly, and a session outside nap time.
For toddlers, morning or late morning is often ideal. Also consider the journey to the studio: a nap in the car can throw off their rhythm. If your little one is unwell on the day, let me know and we'll find a solution together.
2. A heated studio designed for little ones
In winter, cold is the enemy of baby photos. The Varennes home studio is a warm, bright cocoon with an equipped baby corner: you can change, feed or comfort your child in peace, without rushing.
The studio is about 10 minutes from Loches and about 45 minutes from Tours: no long drive with a baby in the car seat. Every year new Christmas sets are installed, designed to keep little ones safe and comfortable, with a parent always within arm's reach.
3. Soft, comfortable outfits
For a baby or toddler, comfort comes first. Clothes that itch, pinch or are too warm, and the child can think of nothing else.
- Soft fabrics: cotton, fine knit, non-irritating wool.
- Colours that go together across the family, without having to match exactly: cream, deep red, fir green, caramel.
- No big logos or cartoon characters: they pull the eye away from faces.
- A spare outfit in the bag, just in case.
4. Comforter, snack and zero pressure
Bring the comforter, the dummy if needed, a little snack or a bottle. These items reassure your child and often make lovely photos.
Above all, avoid "you must smile" or "be good". Children quickly sense adult expectations. I take time to get to know your child before picking up the camera: a game, a song, a look. My work as a childminder taught me one essential thing: a child who feels safe always opens up.
5. Make room for real moments
The best Christmas photos aren't always those where the child looks at the camera. They are often a cuddle in the crook of a neck, a wide-eyed look at a garland, a laugh when dad pulls a funny face.
If baby cries, that's fine: we pause, have a cuddle, and carry on. A session follows the child's rhythm, never the clock's. Your only job is to enjoy the moment: I take care of the rest.
Which collection for a baby or toddler?
For Christmas 2026, three collections are offered at the Varennes studio: Douceur (up to 30 minutes), Cocon (up to 45 minutes, the families' favourite) and Prestige (up to 1 hour). With a toddler, a little extra time leaves room for breaks, which is why many parents choose Cocon.
Find the details on the Christmas sessions page. And if your baby has just been born, discover the newborn session, or the birthday and smash the cake session for their first birthday.
Book at the right time
In 2026, Christmas sessions take place from 24 October to 19 December, on weekends. Online booking closes 15 days before each date. To receive your photos before 25 December, the session must take place by 9 December at the latest, so book by 24 November.
The first weekends go fast, especially mornings, which suit toddlers best. If the date is too close, the gift card is a lovely solution: the session is booked afterwards, whenever you like.
Other questions about Christmas photos with a baby
What age can a baby have a Christmas photo session?
There is no minimum age for a family photo: what matters is your child's rhythm. Choose a time when they are rested and fed, and tell me their age when booking so I can adapt the session.
What if my baby cries during the session?
Nothing to worry about: we pause for a cuddle, a feed or a bottle if needed, then carry on. The studio is heated and has a baby corner for this.
Where can I get a Christmas baby photo near Tours or Loches?
At the Varennes (37600) home studio in South Touraine, about 10 minutes from Loches and 45 minutes from Tours. The Christmas sets are renewed every year.
Can siblings and grandparents join in?
